What is Campbellocking?
It all started with Don Campbell
"Campbellocking", commonly known as Locking, is a Funk dance inspired by the movements and improvisations of Don Campbell.
In 1970, Don Campbell was attempting to learn a party dance known as "The Robot Shuffle". Unable to execute the dance smoothly, his movements began to take on a different form — pauses, freezes, and rhythmic stops that would later become known as "The Lock".
Don's dancing quickly gained attention. As people began copying his movements, a new dance started to emerge. Over time, this evolved into the dance now known worldwide as Campbellocking, or simply Locking.
The dance later gained international visibility through appearances by The Lockers on television programmes such as Soul Train, helping spread Locking and Funk culture globally.
